Golf – Garcia aims to build again

Sergio Garcia is hoping to build on his success towards the end of 2011 as he starts his 2012 campaign at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, which the Spaniard is 22/1 with bet365 to win.

Garcia’s glittering career came to a grinding halt three years ago, but he was back to something like his best when he clinched victories at the Castello Masters and the Andalucia Masters in October last year. “It was definitely a very positive year after two tough years,” Garcia admitted. “Everything’s good and hopefully I can get on a good start, gain some good momentum and keep riding the wave that I was on.”

Garcia is up against a top-class field in the Middle East, with Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer and Tiger Woods all in action. Kaymer, 6/1, appears to be the man to beat, having won in Abu Dhabi three times in the last four years, with a combined score of 80-under par in those four years.

Soccer – Johnson playing mind games

Manchester City winger Adam Johnson believes that Liverpool may be confused over their approach to the second leg of their Carling Cup semi-final. The Reds won 1-0 at the Etihad Stadium in the first leg and Johnson has queried whether the hosts will attack at Anfield, or sit back, with City 2/1 with bet365 to reach the final.

Johnson said: “It’s a tricky one for them. Do they try to attack us or try to defend against our quality players for 90 minutes? “No-one is expecting us to go through, so the pressure is off for once and we can go there with freedom, play our football and have a go.”

The Citizens are 12/1 to win 2-0 at Anfield, with the last time they achieved a two-goal win at Liverpool coming way back in the 1981/82 season. Cardiff City await the winners of City and Liverpool, having overcome Championship rivals Crystal Palace in a penalty shootout on Tuesday evening.

Soccer – Arteta after silverware

Recent Arsenal recruit Mikel Arteta believes that the Gunners can challenge for a first trophy in six years, having improved their form dramatically in recent weeks. The Londoners have won seven of their last eight Premier League games and also qualified for the Champions League knockout stages, with Arsenal 18/1 with bet365 to be crowned champions of Europe for the first time.

That upturn has given Arteta hope of success during his first season with Arsenal following his deadline-day switch from Everton, with he and fellow new boys Per Mertesacker and the now injured Andre Santos having fitted in well.

The Spaniard said: “The club has gone through a lot in the last couple of months, the fans have been disappointed and need something to look forward to. “We won’t forget about the Premier League, but the Champions League can provide that extra something that gives everyone a lift.”

Soccer – Kompany vows City response

Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany is confident that his side will respond to losing their unbeaten Premier League record by beating Arsenal on Sunday.

A 2-1 reverse at Chelsea on Monday evening left the Citizens just two points ahead of Manchester United at the top of the table, but Kompany is confident that his side will be back to winning ways quickly, with City 7/10 with bet365 to see off the Gunners at the Etihad Stadium.

A defiant Kompany said: “We are hungry to win. We’ve known tougher moments so we just have to pick ourselves up. “We will not be arrogant about this fixture. Arsenal are a great team, but we can beat great teams. We are eager to win on Sunday.”

The two sides have already met once this season, with City winning 1-0 in a Carling Cup tie at the Emirates Stadium thanks to a late strike from Sergio Aguero.
